Q: What vibration levels can the connectors handle?
A: Vibration induced forces are low in these extremely lightweight contacts.
As a baseline, we test to EIA-364-28, Test Condition B -- or about 7G's. Other
system applications have been tested successfully at much higher G's.
Q: Is real gold required on the Dot contact?
A: No, gold plating is considered the best contact material and is the plating
of choice for our Standard Family connectors but PHI has recommended other finishes
for customers with special PCB needs.
Q: Can you handle differential pairs?
A: Yes. We simply arrange the dots and traces in the flex circuit to meet the
differential impedance requirements. Everything else stays the same. Coplanar
constructions are also possible.
Q: Are Gold Dot products FCC Class B compliant?
A: FCC Class B concerns finished products - there is no FCC to qualify a component.
However, we have tested the emissions from the Gold Dot Microstrips according
to the same specs FCC recommends for a system. In the test frequency range between
100MHz and 3GHz, using a 10" long circuit at 5Volts in a 3m chamber, we
measured around 70 db microV/m. A production part would be 1/10 that length
and may run at a lower voltage.
Q: Can YIYI create circuits in edge-stitched, Stripline
configuration, and are they still flexible?
A: Yes. Stripline with the shields stitched together is a common construction
for us in high speed equipment. The finished products are technically flex-to-fit.
We are supplying low volume customer specific product and we are planning production
volume manufacturing for mid-2000.
Q: Does YIYI have modeling capabilities?
A: Yes. We have a fairly comprehensive suite of numerical (finite element) modeling
tools that address mechanical, thermal, electrical/electromagnetic challenges.
Additionally our extensive on-site experimental labs as well as the resources
of our parent company are at our disposal. Everything from Von Mises Stress
Plots to Spice Models to OC-48 Eye-Diagrams are within our capabilities.
Q: Do our components meet the Telcordia (Belcore) reliability
standards?
A: Gold Dots have an extensive environmental testing history in the commercial,
automotive, and military markets. Telcordia testing is ongoing. A convenient
summary of the test data is available to interested customers. Please contact
webmaster@yiyief.com for more information.
Q: Is electro-deposited gold contact metal required on
the PCB?
A: No. The commercial products are all tested against the popular thin immersion
gold coating used as a solder wetability agent for common PCB's. We have limited
testing that shows good contact against reflowed solder and other surfaces.
Q: Does the elastomer take a set?
A: Yes.YIYI designs around the change over time of the elastomer. CompSet is
a time-temperature relationship and among the most critical characteristics
for good system reliability. We use a grade of elastomer rated for operation
at 125¢XC.
Q: What are the environmental performance limits?
A: We pre-qualify to a set of common commercial environmental limits.
Q: How much current can a Dot take?
A: More than an amp. The dot is rarely the weak link in a connection system.
The "trace" in the flex circuit is normally made thin to pack in more
lines and improve density. This makes it the limiting element; however, even
the thinnest traces can safely carry a quarter of an amp or so. Wider traces
can be built to carry as much as 20 amps through a set of dots.
Q: What is the high speed electrical performance?
A: More than 2.5 Gbps. This rating is based on a 100ps-rise time that generates
<3% crosstalk.
Q: Can Gold Dot connection systems survive at 150¢XC
temperatures?
A: Yes. All Gold Dot flex circuits can withstand soldering temperatures for
the time of a typical reflow cycle.
Q: Will YIYI Fiber Optic connectors work for both single
mode and multi mode applications?
A: Yes. All our connectors are suitable for single mode and multi mode applications,
and even allow for both in the same connector.
Q: What is the difference between the "metal" termini
and the "ceramic" termini? Which should I use?
A: The "Ceramic" termini are the preferred termini to use for most new applications
for either single mode or multi-mode applications. These give the best overall
performance and are available for most fibers used today.
The "Metal" termini were actually our first fiber optic termini that were developed
for early applications of fiber optic cables. These became the first termini
under the mil-spec, Mil-T-29504/1, /2 and /3. We still manufacture these for
specific applications using multimode fibers.
Q: What kind of optical performance can I expect with
your termini?
A: Based on numerous optical terminations, at our facility and with various
customers, you can expect an average insertion loss in the following range,
depending on the method used to polish the termini:
- Flat polish, multi mode -> .75dB average
- PC polish -> .50dB average
- PC polish, single mode -> .5dB average
- PC polish, enhanced single mode -> .30dB average
Q: What is the back reflection performance with PHI fiber
optic connectors?
A: Once again, depending on the method selected for polishing, performance can
be expected as follows:
- PC polish, single mode -> -35dB average
- PC polish, enhanced single mode -> -47 dB average
Q: What is the difference between sealing on the termini
with an o-ring or with the wiper seal?
A: The termini with the o-ring is our "standard" product and is used as an environmental
seal for most applications.
The "wiper seal" is a seal that can be used, under the commercial part numbers,
for more effective sealing at higher pressures, when it is used in the proper
connector. Generally, the standard part is recommended. Please consult with YIYI's
Applications Engineers for any unique sealing requirements.
